Irene in front of the seal of Kenya.

The KICC, home of the Electoral Commission of Kenya, and site of the irregularities in the vote-tallying process.

The day after the ECK's announcing Kibaki as the winner of the election, we tried to drive to a town an hour and a half north.  We made it about 4 miles before we hit this roadblock, with smoke going up in hills behind it.

Here is a neighbor's store and house that burned on New Years Eve. The flames were 25 or 30 feet in the air, about a quarter mile away from the house.

A matatu with its tires slashed.  People were living in all the matatus parked in town.

A burned out lorry and car in an ethnically mixed neighborhood outside of Eldoret.

A burned out store in downtown Eldoret. My guide told me the owner was known for being an "arrogant Kikuyu."

Remnants of a fire in the street, the morning after the announcement of the election results. We could safely move about during the early mornings through midday, before groups of young men would start appearing on the streets.

A refugee camp in a Catholic church near Eldoret. People gather round someone distributing food.

The yellow spikes on either side of the road are a police roadblock. In Eldoret.

The military took several days to arrive.

A burned out store.

A Kikuyu woman looks over her belongings.

Kikuyus pack everything they can fit in the back of a lorry, and leave for a new life in Nairobi. Notice the people riding in the bed of the lorry.

A portion of Kibera, the largest slum in East Africa.

Dennis and I stand in front of some soldiers "guarding" Uhuru park. We were lucky to have been in downtown Nairobi during one of the few lulls in action.

Parliament, with Uhuru Park in the background.

The masoleum of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya. You can see Uhuru Park and the gate where we took the picture above.

Zebra on the road.

Water buffalo (you guessed it!) on the road.

More water buffalo.

This is on the road into Irene's family's farm! (I'm supposed to make fun of you if you believed me.)

 Dad and two cubs.

The train from Nairobi to Mombasa.

 Bye!
